I write a ton of things I am highly educated in. This is NOT one of them, and for clarity upfront, I am not putting this forward as a probable scientific paper. I am writing this to tickle my “what if” thoughts that tend to get me a lot, and my OCD then has me needing to put it to paper. I am NOT an archeologist. I am NOT a biblical scholar. However, this is written for pure fun and – with a long shot of a billion to one I’m right, I would love to have been “first” to have written about this.
Where this all started for me was my travels to Long Island to see the in laws. They live about 3/4th of a mile from the Bay, and a few miles off of the coast is Fire Island. As it was told to me, many years ago a storm had closed the Bay to the ocean. Or, perhaps, a good portion of it. I don’t know – I just know that there was an inlet that had sand now there. And, a few years ago – a hurricane came in and the waters from the ocean wiped out that sand bar and allowed the Atlantic Ocean to now come back into the bay. This is how it was told to me, and I have ZERO knowledge of this, other than what was told to me.

So we know that sand, debris, and the like can create natural separations between oceans and bays. Which is why this gets me a lot.

The first thing you are going to say is Zanclear from 5 million years ago! And, you would be correct. Still – it bothers me that I have seen with my own two eyes that inlets can be blocked off, and this can occur naturally or through storms.
This is what it may look like from the side.

And further inland – this.

Let’s look at depth…

No doubt this has serious depth to the east on this, but to the west on this – you can see perhaps at points it’s only 100 meters deep.

We know that during the last ice age, that the oceans were 400 ft lower. Well, that puts 10,000 or so years ago about the level of this red line. Could this have been a massive, massive sand bar that segregated the Atlantic from the Mediterranean about 10,000 years ago? It doesn’t mean that one day the ice melted and instantly water flooded in.
Work with me here. What if for tens of thousands of years, this was a form of land bridge. While you had some early people go out towards Asia, it also makes sense for some to go from Morocco up – and then cross over to North America, and then went down to South America this way.

While we all agree about the land bridge at the Bering sea with ice, this map here explains how peoples could have crossed from Morocco to Gibraltar to then go north, travel over the ice sheets, and get to north America.
I had remembered reading that to define “civilization” you would think about the first ceremonial burials – and they found evidence of this in South America prior to people coming over the Bering Sea bridge.
Furthermore, to have an ice age like this, consider that the warm waters from Africa aren’t traveling up towards the UK. If they had warm waters traveling in this manner, the warm water would not allow the ice sheets.
But what caused the ice sheets to melt? Naturally occurring events? One thing I did learn from the climate people was that salinity in water will affect currents. So what if, perhaps for thousands or tens of thousands of years that the Mediterranean was choked off from the Atlantic. What would happen?
Well, consider that the heat from Africa could evaporate a lot of the water. You can even consider the Sicily Sill may have been the border between the West and East Mediterranean. What if the East Mediterranean was then also choked off from the west mediterranean? This could have Malta be connected to Sicily 10,000 or so years ago.

What kinds of events could have triggered all kinds of problems?

Here is a seismic zonation map. We all know about Pompei. But does anyone realize how volatile turkey is?
We now also see the Black Sea…

Which is connected to the Mediterranean by….

This could suggest that the strait of Bosphorus – during the ice age – would have been dry. Perhaps if the Mediterranean was cut off from the Atlantic, and the water levels receded even more – that this whole area would have been a valley and not filled with water.
There is no doubt that the Black Sea has been there forever, as these depths show that it would have been filled regardless if connected to the Mediterranean.

On another note, we have the Dead Sea that is well below sea level – and HIGHLY salty. But it could have been remnants of the earlier Mediterranean OR have been flooded with sea water over the mountains – and then isolated. This preserved the salty mediterranean waters.

Then – perhaps, we can consider how Noah’s ark may have been washed to Mt. Ararat – then, survivors of this created the first civilization.

Here is the topography of how the ark could have gotten there from a tidal wave.

Now, 5100m up is a bit much. That is peak. The suggestion was it was 17 miles south of Ararat, at perhaps 2200m. The problem with this theory is that it means somehow that water levels rose hundreds if not thousands of feet? This is kind of hard to believe, and would suggest, perhaps, that this ark may have ridden a major tidal wave to its final resting place about 10,000-12,000 years ago. This timeline is somewhere around the timeline of Atlantis. And, these survivors from the ark are perhaps those who settled into the “fertile crescent” to create “civilization”. However, if people were making arks of that size 6000 years prior to this, it would suggest that there were earlier civilizations that were obliterated perhaps overnight.
Consider for a moment that this did exist, and there may have been 100 people on the ark, and for argument’s sake, 15 survived – mostly children, they may not have had the science and knowledge taught to them – nor the writing. It was, in a sense, a reboot of mankind. These descendants thousands of years later could have been the Sumerians.
But here is the theory I am posing….
- During the ice age, there was a form of inlet formed that had a sand-type of barrier that was perhaps a few miles wide. It separated the Atlantic from the Mediterranean.
- Something happened. Maybe a giant glacier splashed into the sea and caused a tidal wave. Perhaps something in Turkey happened that caused the Black sea to flood in to the strait of Bosphorus
- Noah was amongst the people in (now Israel) and either understood the inlet from the Atlantic OR the Blasphorus Strait was a weak point. Perhaps seismic activity could have started shaking a lot, and this provided evidence to people then that there may be severe flooding or tidal waves coming.
- Atlantis was either real, or a culmination of societies that made up the most educated people at the time. Some had navigated to South America years before, others went towards Asia. Atlantis was perhaps hundreds of feet below the current depths of the Mediterranean.
- Some major event then connected the Black Sea to the Atlantic – whether it was a seismic event from Turkey or a tidal wave over the strait of Gibraltar – or BOTH. One could have triggered the other, as we have seen what happened in Japan with a tidal wave. We have seen what this did to Java in Indonesia. It is possible that Noah’s ark was a form of emergency boat created in the event of a tidal wave to come – that may have come previously and killed a lot of people.
- Evidence suggests that the Sphinx is much older than we thought, and there’s evidence there of water erosion at the base. When we all think of Egypt, it’s about the pyramids and desert. Why are pyramids found in other locations in the world, around the time they were made in Egypt, thousands of miles away?
- For thousands of years, the Mediterranean evaporated, and this could have caused a lot of devastation to north african climate. But this also made the water more salty. When these water bodies collided, it then made the basin outside of the Strait of Gibraltar much saltier – this could have then helped move warm water up to Europe.
- As more and more ice melted, the water receded from the floods, but then gradually making the ocean levels higher each year.
- Atlantis and Noah could be sort of the same story – or variations of the same story.
- “global warming” or “climate change” is perhaps the oceans reverting back to their normal salinity from around these regions after thousands of years of the currents taking warm water up to northern Europe, these are stalling out. This could be perhaps triggering the next ice age in the next few hundred years. If this happens, waters recede, and the same pattern happens again with the Mediterranean.
Conclusion
Science is about observation and then gathering evidence to support the thesis. My overarching thesis accounts for how pyramids could be in several places at the same time – yet thousands of miles apart. It gives credence to how Atlantis could have been – and how an advanced civilization of sorts who lived on Atlantis – or around it, could have been wiped out. A few survivors who were young and didn’t understand tech could have been the parents of most of Sumarians as we know them, and some of this tech could have been passed down over thousands of years. This could support the concept of Noah’s ark, and with this, it could be an origin story for Adam and Eve – of sorts, but backwards. Adam and even could have been the metaphorical survivors from the Ark, and they are the ancestors of the Sumerians. While the stories were passed down from generation to generation, it would make sense that a few survivors of an apocalypse who were young-ish did not have the ability to pass on the advances of the society they came from. Think about if today, our planet of 8 billion people were reduced to a few dozen teenagers – they would not be able to survive without refrigeration, laptops, and modern tech. Perhaps a few who lived in the mountains and were 10-12 years old knew how to hunt for food, but there was no ability to write on paper. Language was verbal and passed down through generations, and stories were told of the events and jumbled. To survive, early laws needed to be created to ensure the survival of mankind.
This theory gives the best explanation of how the Bible could be true in its earliest forms of the Old Testament, yet also can explain how an Atlantis could have existed and was “swallowed by the sea”. Having a few young survivors could explain how tech could be lost, yet the stories survived over time.
